A former primary school that closed its doors in 2003 has been vibrantly reborn. Once filled with the laughter of students, it is now a bustling hub for creators—featuring woodworking, glass art, and paper crafts, alongside traditional regional straw weaving.

京都府南部の山間、閉校となった旧田山小学校の木造校舎をリノベーションしたカフェと工房「は・ど・る」。
校舎の長い廊下を歩くとき、足裏に伝わる木の軋みと匂いに、ふと少年時代のような懐かしさを覚えます。
ここは単に古い建物を再利用しただけの場所ではありません。
かつて学びの場であった空間が、今はカフェの温もりと工房の静かな創造性へと姿を変え、新たな歴史を「積み重ね」ています。「は・ど・る」という名前の通り、ここで過ごす時間は、訪れる人の心に小さな進みをもたらしてくれるはずです。

A gentle passage of time lingers in a place that once echoed with the voices of children. Tucked away in the mountains of southern Kyoto lies “Hadoru,” a cafe and studio repurposed from the wooden buildings of the former Tayama Elementary School.
As I walk down the long hallways, the creak of the wood beneath my feet and the scent of the past evoke a sudden, poignant nostalgia. This is more than just a reuse of an old building; the space that was once a place of learning has transformed into a sanctuary of warmth and quiet creativity, “layering” a new history upon the old. True to its name, Hadoru—which implies “making progress”—brings a small sense of forward motion to the hearts of those who visit.

教室の窓から差し込む光は、町家とはまた違う、少し無骨で透明な光です。
手入れされた木床には、長い年月をかけて磨かれた艶があり、そこへ光が落ちると、まるで光の粒子が浮かんでいるように見えます。私の大好きな「薄い線」と「淡い色」が、この校舎の風景にも隠れています。
A Canvas of Polished Wood
The light filtering through these classroom windows carries a quality distinct from that of a townhouse—it is perhaps a bit more raw, yet remarkably transparent. The wooden floors, cared for over the years, hold a sheen earned with the passage of time; when the light catches them, it seems as though particles of light are suspended in the air. The “thin lines” and “pale colors” I hold so dear are hidden here, too, in the landscape of this old schoolhouse.
「作る」ことと「味わう」ことの調和
工房から聞こえる微かな音と、コーヒーの香り。学び舎だったこの場所で、今は大人たちが何かを創り、何かを味わっている。建物そのものが、時の流れとともに役割を変えながら、美しく熟成していく。そんな「時間の蓄積」を、私はこの校舎に感じます。
旧田山小学校の校舎を活用して週末を中心に営業する「cafe ねこぱん」でゆっくりとした時間を過ごせます。
The Harmony of Creation and Savouring
The faint sounds drifting from the workshop and the rich aroma of coffee. In this place that once served as a schoolhouse, adults now gather to create and to savour. The architecture itself matures beautifully, evolving its purpose alongside the flow of time. I can feel this “accumulation of time” within these walls.
You can spend a leisurely time at “Cafe Nekopan,” which operates primarily on weekends, making use of the former Tayama Elementary School building.

A complex renovated from a wooden schoolhouse that closed its doors in 2003. Once a place echoing with the voices of children, this schoolhouse has matured beautifully alongside the passage of time. With its polished wooden floors and transparent light streaming through the windows, you can immerse yourself in the memories of this school while enjoying a quiet moment with coffee and handmade crafts. “Cafe Nekopan” operates on weekends.
