奈良町の古い街並みを歩いていると、ふと時間の流れが緩やかになる場所に出会います。
格子戸をくぐり、一歩足を踏み入れた瞬間に感じるのは、外の喧騒とは隔絶された独特の静けさ。

「奈良町にぎわいの家」は、ただ歴史的な建物を保存するだけの場所ではありません。
土間を吹き抜ける風の音、障子越しに柔らかく拡散される光、そして使い込まれた木の床の質感。
そこには、かつてこの場所で営まれていた「生活の気配」が、今も静かに息づいています。

Naramachi Nigiwai no Ie: Memories of Silence Woven by Light and Shadow — A 1917 Townhouse

As I wander through the historic streets of Naramachi, I find myself in places where time seems to slow its pace.

Passing through the lattice door, the very moment I step inside, I am met with a unique stillness—utterly detached from the bustle of the world outside. Naramachi Nigiwai no Ie is more than just a place where history is preserved.

It is the sound of the wind drifting through the doma (earthen floor), the soft light diffused through shoji screens, and the worn texture of the wooden flooring. Here, the “traces of life” once lived within these walls still quietly breathe to this day.

日本家屋にある「余白」が美しすぎる町屋

この町屋の本質は、建築全体が抱く「余白」にあるのかもしれません。
ただ何もないわけではなく、あえて余白を残すことで、光は柔らかく拡散し、風は静かに通り抜けていく。
この建物は、かつての住人の気配を慈しみ、時間をゆっくりと呼吸するための空間です。

レンズを通してその余白を切り取ると、目には見えない空気が、まるで宝石のような繊細な粒子の輝きを放ち始めます。
何も写らないようでいて、その空間のすべてがそこに在る。その繊細な均衡が垣間見れる日本家屋です。

The Beauty of “Negative Space” in this Townhouse

Perhaps the essence of this townhouse lies in the “negative space” that the entire architecture embraces.

It is not merely about emptiness; by intentionally leaving space, light diffuses softly and the breeze passes through quietly. This building is a vessel that cherishes the presence of those who lived here and allows time to breathe.

When I capture this negative space through my lens, the transparent air—invisible to the naked eye—begins to sparkle like particles of light. It feels as if nothing is there, yet everything is present. That delicate balance is the true beauty I sought to capture in this place.

大正ガラスのゆらぎに、光を溶かす

手吹きによる不均一な厚みが作り出す、あの独特の波打ち。
大正ガラス越しに差し込む光は、まるで水面に反射する光のように、空間を優しく歪ませます。
現代の均一なガラスには決して写せない、柔らかで曖昧な影の輪郭。
町家の静寂とこの「ゆらぎ」が重なるとき、ファインダー越しに見える世界は、過去と現在が混ざり合った夢のような質感に包まれます。

Dissolving Light into the Undulation of Taisho Glass

That unique, undulating texture created by the uneven thickness of hand-blown glass. The light filtering through these antique windowpanes gently distorts the room, much like ripples reflecting on the surface of water. It softens the contours of shadows in a way that modern, uniform glass never could. When the stillness of the Machiya meets this yuragi—this shimmer—the world through my viewfinder becomes wrapped in a dreamlike texture, where the past and present softly bleed into one another.

奈良町の町家に足を踏み入れると、必ずと言っていいほど、家の中心に小さな「庭」が存在します。
それは坪庭（つぼにわ）と呼ばれ、外の世界を遮断する壁に囲まれながらも、空と直結した特別な空間です。

この坪庭こそ、町家が呼吸するための「光の装置」です。暗い土間へ光を導き、淀みがちな室内に風を運ぶ。
ただの装飾ではなく、この建物が生き続けるために不可欠な機能美。

ファインダーを覗き、庭の草木にピントを合わせたとき、そこには建物が抱える「余白」の美しさが浮かび上がります。

The “Negative Space” that Invites Light and Wind — Capturing the Quiet Tsuboniwa in Naramachi

When you step into a townhouse in Naramachi, you are almost certain to find a small “garden” at its heart. Known as tsuboniwa, it is a special space enclosed by walls that shut out the outside world, yet it remains directly connected to the sky.

This tsuboniwa is an “apparatus of light,” allowing the townhouse to breathe. It guides sunlight into the dark earthen doma and carries the breeze into the often stagnant rooms. It is not merely decoration, but a functional beauty essential for the house to live on.

When I peer through my viewfinder and focus on the greenery of the garden, the beauty of the “negative space” held within the architecture emerges. In the stillness, as light and shadow weave their patterns, I continue to layer these moments as a record of time.

季節を纏う町家

「にぎわいの家」は、季節の移ろいに合わせて、その表情を柔軟に変えていきます。
夏には建具を取り払い、土間から奥座敷まで風が通り抜ける開放的な空間へ。冬には障子を閉ざし、柔らかな光を室内に留めて温もりを守る。

この町家は、決して固定された箱ではありません。
四季とともに呼吸するこの建築の「可変性」こそが、日本の暮らしが育んできた、最も美しいデザインの知恵なのです。

The Townhouse that Wears the Seasons: The Flexibility of Light and Wind

“Nigiwai no Ie” flexibly changes its expression in harmony with the changing seasons. In summer, partitions are removed, creating an open space that allows the breeze to flow from the earthen doma to the back room. In winter, shoji screens are drawn, capturing soft light to preserve warmth within.

This townhouse is by no means a fixed box. The “flexibility” of this architecture, which breathes along with the four seasons, is the most beautiful wisdom of design nurtured by Japanese living. Through my lens, I capture the differences in how the light enters at each moment, accumulating a “record of change” for this building.
