The cherry blossoms along the Saho River glow like pale gems, weaving a tunnel of light that whispers the arrival of spring.

Which Lens to Bring?
Choosing the right lens is always a dilemma. When the final image isn’t clear, most people might default to a 35mm or 50mm. However, this time I had a specific vision: I wanted to create a dramatic effect using lens compression.
So, I reached for my Nikkor 180mm f/2.8—a pristine copy I recently scored for a great price. On the GFX, it behaves like a 142mm, which felt like the perfect focal length to compress the long, beautiful row of trees. It was a tight fit, but it captured the scene exactly how I imagined.
This is not just a landscape; it’s a structural study of light and petals, designed to bring the overwhelming beauty of a Japanese spring into a single, focused frame.
The Color Science of Spring
I’ve realized that cherry blossoms (Sakura) look their most beautiful when surrounded by weeds and trees. In color theory, the soft pink of the blossoms and the yellow-green of spring foliage are complementary colors. This contrast makes both colors “pop” and adds a sense of depth to the frame.
Adding a touch of yellow—perhaps from wildflowers—serves as a bridge between the pink and the green. It harmonizes the palette, creating a more cohesive and pleasing visual experience. It’s fascinating how these rules of design reveal themselves in the natural world.

Saho River: A Legacy of Cherry Blossoms
Speaking of Nara, the Saho River is iconic. The cherry blossom trees along this river were apparently planted when my wife was just a little girl. Now, they have grown into a breathtaking promenade stretching over a kilometer. It’s a sight that draws photographers from far and wide.
With a new train station set to open nearby soon, I suspect it will become even more crowded. I’m glad I could capture its beauty in a more tranquil moment.
