The Sacred Deer of Nara: Messengers of the Gods in the Ancient Capital

Snap / スナップ, Photography / 写真作品, , , , ,

For over a millennium, the wild deer of Nara Park have been revered as sacred messengers of the gods. Today, they roam freely through the ancient temple grounds and lush forests, living in a unique harmony with the people of Nara. In my 25 years of photography, I have captured these majestic creatures not just as animals, but as spiritual symbols of the city’s heritage. From the quiet misty mornings in the woods to the gentle interactions in the park, these images reveal the soul of Nara’s living icons.
