Nigiwai House (“Nigiwai-no-Ie”) is a beautifully preserved traditional merchant home in Naramachi, Nara. Despite its name, which implies “liveliness,” the true essence of this space is its profound silence.
As a designer with 25 years of experience in visual structure, I dedicated this series to capturing that very silence. These photographs are not mere recordings of a room; they are designed spaces, intended to bring the deep, tranquil atmosphere of Nara’s traditional architecture into your modern home.

【Technical Excellence: Resolution meets Artful Softness】 This artwork was captured using the Nikon Z7, a 45.7MP full-frame beast, but its heart belongs to the legendary Mamiya 80mm f/1.9 medium format lens.
The combination results in an image of extraordinary clarity (from the Z7’s high-res sensor) but rendered with the signature Mamiya “glowing softness” and “thin, painterly lines” that digital lenses cannot emulate. The shadows are rendered in a deep, sapphire-like “Naramachi Blue,” creating a mystical and calming effect.
【Interior Harmony: Cultivating a Mindful Space】 This print is designed to be a “mindful window” within your living space. The calming blues and minimalist geometric lines of the shoji screens and zen garden details provide a sense of structure and peace.
- Recommended Interior: Perfect for Japandi, minimalist, or Zen-inspired interiors.
- Framing Suggestion: A sleek matte-black frame for a sophisticated, traditional feel, or natural wood for a warmer touch.
- Ideal Placement: Best suited for a home office, meditation area, or any room requiring a calming, contemplative focal point.
Bring the sophisticated, deep silence of Nara, designed by a professional eye, into your personal sanctuary.
