A Weekday at Hirakata Park with the Z fc

, ,
NIKON Z fc / 0.0 mm f/0.0 / Amusement park
A century-old merchant house where the seasons breathe. Sitting on the veranda and watching the light play in the garden, I felt the timeless wisdom of traditional Japanese living.

Trading the “Mad Machine” for the Nikon Z fc

Over a decade ago, I recommended the Sigma DP1 Merrill to my wife. While the image quality was legendary, its unique quirks made it nearly impossible to use comfortably, and it sat gathering dust for years. I’ve finally replaced it with the Nikon Z fc. Setting aside the debate over pure image rendering, the mechanical refinement of the Z fc is night and day—it’s an absolute joy to use.

I’m finding ISO 3200 to be perfectly usable, which is a revelation. With the old DP1, the world turned into a noisy mess at ISO 400. Today, I took the Z fc for its first spin at Hirakata Park, and the experience has been seamless.

Unbeatable Value: The DX 16-50mm f/3.5-6.3

On this outing, I paired my Nikon Z fc with the kit lens (DX 16-50mm f/3.5-6.3) and a vintage Minolta MC 50mm f/1.4. The DX 16-50mm is incredibly compact and lightweight. While the extending barrel looks a bit clunky when shooting, it looks surprisingly sleek when retracted.

Considering the price and size, this lens is outstanding. Yes, the all-plastic build feels a bit cheap to the touch, but I’ve made my peace with that in exchange for such portability and performance. It covers everything from wide-angle to standard, so unless I need telephoto reach, it handles almost every situation with ease.

The only real drawback is the aperture—f/6.3 at 50mm and f/3.5 at 16mm is quite slow for someone used to prime lenses. But if you decide not to chase creamy bokeh, it’s not an issue at all. Given what it costs, the image quality is more than enough; in fact, it’s the best value lens in my entire kit.

Character Comparison: Minolta MC 50mm f/1.4 vs. DX 16-50mm

I find the “white glow” of the Minolta MC 50mm f/1.4 simply delightful. When I used it on my GFX, the rendering felt quite rich and heavy. On the Z fc, it retains a bold, thick line and deep colors, but it never feels overwhelming—it’s surprisingly easy to work with.

In contrast, the DX 16-50mm is much more modern; it’s sharp, high-contrast, and favors deep blacks. It feels almost “urban” in its rendering. The DX lens excels in cityscapes, whereas the Minolta brings a sense of atmosphere.

The Z fc’s aesthetic is so specific that it seems to have few native Z-mount lenses that truly match its vibe. I suspect this camera will become my dedicated body for vintage glass. I also have the MC 50mm f/1.7, but I’ll save that for another time.

My Thoughts After Trying the Z fc

*First off, the shutter speed tops out at 1/4000—I really should have checked the specs before buying, but I guess that’s the reality when it’s based on the Z 50. Since the base ISO is 100, shooting in bright spring or summer daylight will definitely require stopping down to avoid overexposure.

As for the dials, I’ve found that with Auto ISO on, I hardly use the dedicated ISO dial. The shutter speed dial sees little action, too. Maybe the exposure compensation dial is the only one I’ll really use—the rest are essentially just for show. Also, there’s no sensor cleaning feature. Again, I suppose that’s what you get at this price point. That said, this camera is meant to be a playground for vintage lenses, which makes swapping glass a necessity—I’ll just have to be careful.

It feels a bit “cheap” due to the light weight, but I can overlook that. Having owned the classic NEW FM2, the design clearly feels like an homage to it. While the FM2 has that cold, solid mechanical feel in the hand, the Z fc does a respectable job mimicking its iconic look.

Z fc: Surprisingly Capable in Low Light

I didn’t have high expectations for an APS-C sensor in low light, but I’ve found that the Z fc is perfectly usable up to ISO 3200. Although the body lacks in-body stabilization, the lens-based VR handles it well enough to shoot handheld even in dimly lit environments.

The photo below was shot at ISO 1600 inside an indoor facility at Hirakata Park. Given that I was using the kit lens at f/6.3, I’d say the ISO performance is a pass. I’m confident that with a faster prime lens, this camera will handle even darker indoor settings with ease.

Since this was my first time testing it out, I’ll share more thoughts as I experiment with different lenses—even if it is technically my wife’s camera!

Hirakata Park: A Hidden Gem for Photography and Fun

While it might not have the same massive popularity as USJ, Hirakata Park (often called “Hira-Par”) is a fantastic destination. On weekdays, it’s remarkably uncrowded, allowing you to hop on rides with almost zero stress. If you alternate between enjoying the attractions and capturing the scenery, it’s the kind of place where you can spend an entire day without ever getting bored.
